Artistic Director / CEO Mike Pony
Unstabled CEO and Director Mike Pony (MPhil) is an arts producer and former live artist working from Bristol, UK. He is the director of Submerge Festival, Horseplay and Eat Sleep Drag Repeat.
As well as directing Submerge Festival, Mike has curated and produced a number of large-scale performance and clubbing events for other festivals, including events for Bristol Pride (Dressage, Plastic 2013) and In Between Time Festival (Dressage, The Storm)
Mike is director and DJ at LGBT clubnight Horseplay, which often presents experimental performance in a club format. Horseplay is a collaboration with Jeremy Horwood and Rob Johnstone.
Mike was a recipient of the Artists International Development Fund in 2015, and subsequently launched new Arts Council England funded festival; Submerge, in November 2016. Submerge is an ambitious hybrid festival of audiovisual arts, electronic music and live performance. The festival was received with strong reviews across the board.
Mike works with a number of freelance producers, production managers, designers, artists and performers to realise Unstabled events, which are often collaborations. For his Arts Council England funded event The Storm (produced for IBT15 Bristol International Festival) he commissioned a new digital artwork from international technology artists Playmodes, which was presented along with a mix of new and established live performances from some of the UK’s best performers.
Mike is interested in creating platforms for artists to present radical performance, where new audiences can gain access to exemplary but challenging artistic work and where artists get the opportunity to work with large audiences beyond the usual live art event attenders. He often does this by presenting performance art in unusual environments, or alongside live music or DJs. Mike holds a Master of Philosophy (2010) in one-to-one performance from University of Bristol.
